Anne Double has been elected to serve the people of the Mount Charles Ward in St Austell following a by-election caused by the resignation of the former Lib Dem Group Leader on the Town Council. When the area was last fought politically in 2009 it was won by the Lib Dems. In a devastating verdict from the electorate they saw themselves come fourth with a mere 14% of the vote behind both an Independent and Labour.
Local Conservatives have selected Mrs Anne Double to stand for the seat vacated by the former Leader of the Liberal Democrat group, Cllr Denis Bennett. The election, which has now been called, is expected to take place on or around the 27th October 2011 should it be contested. Anne, who is happily married to Steve, is celebrating her 25th wedding anniversary this year. Anne, who lives in St Austell, has three children who have attended local schools. Anne works for local South East Cornwall MP Sheryll Murray as her Senior Caseworker.
In a statement Anne said, “It is a privilege to be selected by local Conservatives to stand up for the people of Mount Charles. I feel confident that I can serve the people of Mount Charles and will be working hard to gain their trust.” Sheryll Murray MP said, “Anne is an excellent caseworker who really goes that extra distance to solve local issues which arise in the constituency. The people of Mount Charles would be really lucky to have Anne on their side because I know how hard she would work for them. Anne has considerable experience in dealing with issues and she has my full backing and support.”
At a by-election fought yesterday, following the resignation of Cllr Harry Heywood from the Town Council, Conservative Lisa Shuttlewood won the seat after a straight fight against the Liberal Democrats. Lisa is a local businesswoman who with her business partner run their own lingerie shop in the town centre.
The final result was:
Lisa Shuttlewood -Conservative 444 - 53%
Philip Ley -Liberal Democrat 388 - 47%
Turnout -22.4%
A big thank you to everyone who supported Lisa Shuttlewood's successful bid to join the Newquay Conservative Councillor Team. Lisa beat the Lib Dem candidate by 444 votes to the Lib Dem's 388.
Lisa Shuttlewood has been chosen to represent the Conservative Party in the Newquay North By-election due to take place on the 18th August following the resignation of Harry Heywood. In a statement she promises, "I feel passionate about this wonderful area and its community. I feel I can help. Please give me a chance as I really do care and want to see fairness for all the people I represent on our Town Council."

At the beginning of July some of the Members of St Austell & Newquay Conservatives got together to discuss the issues of the day with neighbouring Conservative MP, Sheryll Murray. High on the agenda were the proposed changes to the coastguard, the recent strikes and the general state of the economy.
St Austell & Newquay Conservatives at a recent meeting showed their support for the No Campaign.
It has become clear that AV is the wrong voting system for Britain. AV is an unfair, expensive and discredited voting system, that allows the candidate who comes third to win elections.
Thank you for your support at the last election. Because of you, David Cameron is the first Conservative Prime Minister in 13 years and the Government’s plans to build a strong economy and a big society are in full swing.
